When Shane Persian decided he was ready to marry his mother, he knew he wanted her to know.

After a series of conversations with her, Persian knew he would find his love.

And he wanted to make it special for her, too.

Persian, a 32-year-old from Dallas, had been dating his mother for about a year.

When he was 17, Persians mother, Shannon, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

Shannon had to have her lungs removed.

Persians parents, who live in New York, flew in to see her every few months, and he was able to be there.

“I was looking forward to being there and meeting her and having her say, ‘I love you, too,’ ” Persian says.

“She just loved it.

And it’s been great to see them grow and grow and get better.”

But it’s not all roses for Persians mom, Shannon.

She’s battling a rare form of cancer.

The disease causes her lung to swell, making it difficult for her to breathe.

“It’s not a good thing,” Persian admits.

“But I think we’re doing what we can to make the best of it.”

Persians is currently battling another form of lung cancer called Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and his mother says he’s been battling it since he was 4.

“Shannon was fighting this for her entire life,” Persians says.

His mom, who lives in Dallas, flew to see his every few month, and Persians was able at age 17 to be in Shannon’s hospital room and have a face-to-face conversation.

“He’s been able to just be around her for years and years and still be able to connect with her,” Persions mom says.

Persis mother, who is battling Hodgkin lymphoma and is also battling the stage 4 lung tumor, says she was able “to see Shane grow, just to be around him, just for that time.

It’s been a privilege for me.”
